Everyone wants to be healthy and beautiful, right?

What do I mean by beautiful? What I don't mean is slavishly conforming to the latest arbitrary dimension fad. Like the 1950s 36"-24"-36" Marilyn ideal or Korea's current obsession with female 'lines': S-line (breasts and buttocks, viewed from the side), U-line (exposed lower back), V-line (one for face, and another for the line in-between breasts), W-line (breasts), X-line (long legs and arms, with a narrow waist), and M-line (abdominals, for men).

To me, beauty is an energy you exude. A glow, a youthful radiance full of joy and possibility. This shine is what attracts others, regardless of your physical features. In other words, beauty is really just another expression of health.

Today I will share five simple keys to creating this energy of health (and thus beauty) with ease.

If you'd like to know more, ask me in person anytime between 9:30-11:30 am Wednesday 30 May at the International Health & Beauty Fair, Ambassador Hotel in Seoul. I'll be doing hands on skin care demonstrations - so come along and pamper yourself!

Busy? Start here

I know you're busy. Me too. Who has time to keep up to date with all the latest science beamed to us hourly via the internet and media?

Personally, I find it interesting and scan it quickly for goodies. Most people, however, busy with work and family, simply ignore it and do what everyone else does: buy the easiest and cheapest products at the local supermarket. Fair enough.

Sadly, the ever rising rates of chronic illnesses show that this approach is clearly not working. How many people around you do you know with one of these: cancer, heart disease, diabetes, depression, Alzheimers, stress/chronic fatigue, skin disorders, digestive complaints, or are simply sick all the time? Probably quite a few.

The fact is, people are sicker, less happy, and more stressed than ever before, despite having the vast amounts of new 'scientific knowledge'.

Does that make sense? No. Perhaps we have TOO much information and have become confused? So my invitation is to get back to basics. Ready? Let's go.

Breath & drink deeply

Oxygen and water, they're free and vital. WIthout them you won't last long. Have more of them you'll look and feel even better - so get as much of these two as you can!

Our bodies are 70+% water so don't skimp. Be aware that not all water is created equal. If you don't have ready access to pristine, mineralised water, then buy the best water filter you can. My favourite filter costs several thousand dollars and produces the highest quality clean AND bioavailable mineralised alkaline water.

If you live in a particularly polluted city, consider adding some drops of liquid oxygen to your life. In Korea, you can visit oxygen rooms in some saunas and in other cities you can pop into an oxygen bar. Instead of shot of coffee, grab some oxygen! Your body and brain will love you for it.

Mineralised, oxygenated, alkaline bodies are robustly healthy and will repel most viruses and bacteria.

Feed your body the right stuff

Most cultures throughout history have considered food to be the best medicine. So why has our modern Western culture seem to have forgotten this and fallen in love with fast and processed food?

I get it. We're busy and it's fast. It's also fast at slowing us down.

The best prescription for health & beauty is whole food (unprocessed), free of chemicals (organic), farmed close to where you live (fresh). No faster snack than an apple!

Another handy thing to know is that our bodies actually NEED natural salt (not table salt; personally I like pink Himalayan salt with 80+ trace elements) and a good dose of Vitamin D from the sun.

The soil our plants are grown in is now often extremely more, and our food does not contain all the vitamins, minerals and elements we need, so that's why we take supplements. When you do, make sure you get the best quality supplements you can. Not all supplements are created equal (see more below).

Avoid potentially harmful chemicals

Go through your bathroom cabinet and take a look at the labels on your bath gel, shampoo, conditioner and other personal care and beauty products. Can you spot just these TWO names? Probably. Their Chemical Material Safety Data sheets say this:
  • Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS, engine degreaser) carcinogenic precursor, tissue damage resulting in kidney damage. Skin/eye irritant. May cause allergic reaction. Accumulates in organs;
  • Propylene Glycol (anti freeze) – May cause eye, kidney, and liver damage, skin reactions, possible seizures in children. Neurotoxin, accumulates in organs, suspected of causing birth abnormalities.
When I discovered this 12 years ago, my entire bathroom cabinet went straight in the bin.

And these are just two of 3000+ potentially harmful chemicals we are exposed to each day in our food, personal care, beauty and household products.

Start by removing just these two chemicals from your home. If you're keen, carry a checklist of some of the most commonly used ones to avoid (listed on this free bilingual multi-lingual pocket guide) with you shopping so you can be more aware and avoid as many as possible.

Looking for a cost effective, natural way to remove toxins, bacteria and other nasties from your body, home or office? Try nature's best: charcoal (hey, NASA uses it, why not you too?).

Relax, move and laugh!

Laughter is the best medicine they say? What if that were true?

Start with a smile. Whenever you're feeling sick, tired, stressed, or cranky, force your face into a grin. It may feel odd at first, but you will get used to it and be amazed at the difference it can make to your health and beauty.

Bodies and minds love to move and wiggle and dance and leap and have fun. Exercise will  pump your body full of oxygen - another bonus. It will also make you ready for bed.

Bodies and minds also love to sleep and relax. When you're asleep your body and skin rejuvenates and your mind sorts itself to give you optimum performance the next day.

What if you could laugh, dance and sleep your way to better health & beauty? I'm in!!

Choose health & beauty

Is your point of view that you are inevitably going to get older, uglier and sicker? Be aware of the huge influence your thoughts have on your physical body.

What if instead, your point of view was that you never need be sick, tired, or lack energy?

Your point of view creates your reality. So which do you choose? I know my choice.

Your body may of course have something going on it needs to tell you about. That is what discomfort and pain can be. Your body saying "HEY listen to me!!! I need something!!!". So would you be willing to listen?

In fact, what if you started a conversation with your body to give it what it needs, before it screams at you in pain? Like this: "Body, what do you require?" Your body knows exactly what it needs, just listen.

All products are not created equal

What do you spend your money on? Expensive handbags, shoes, clothes, cars, kids education? Sure, no problem with those if they make you feel good. Feeling good is good for your heal

What do you do when it comes to water, food and other products you put on and in your body? Do you default to the cheapest available? A lot of people do.

I was prompted the other day to learn more about how supplements stack up against each other. In 2007, a group of Canadian and US scientists did a comparison.

A staggering 50 out of the total 110 multivitamins did not even reach 10% and only the top 11 multivitamins were above 25% of what the human body needs on a daily basis.

The popular supermarket brands all featured below 10% possibly due to being forced to compete on price with other supermarkets. The downside for you, means the product you take every day is a hugely inferior supplement.

I am sure this model is not limited to supplements. Recently the Korean government announced it was not happy to find that 80% of the cost of personal care/beauty products went toward the PACKAGING alone. So you can imagine the quality of the product ingredients...

In other words, you get what you pay for. A good approach? Choose products that have a direct impact on your health - those that you ingest or absorb into you body - backed by a great company with a good reputation for quality assurance and do not just buy any old product because of the price.

Like to make a difference?

As consumers, we have enormous influence to create the world we'd like. How? Simply by choosing where we spend our money. Here's how. It's not rocket science.
  • Be aware of what is nurturing to your body and what is potentially harmful.

  • Buy what is nurturing and avoid what is not.

  • Identify companies committed to using only nurturing, safe and effective ingredients, and only use their products.

  • Ask your local shops to stock these products/companies; if not, buy online.
Does that sound easy? Give it a go. Need help? Ask me anytime and I can introduce you to the products I use.

Another short, awesome video. Meet the tiny assassin hunters sent by the human body's immune system to battle invaders like cancer cells. The video above shows a killer "cytotoxic T cell" (pictured in green) in a death duel with a cancer cell (blue) as seen under a microscope. Read the original story here or read below.

In this video we see a killer T cell of the immune system attacking a cancer cell.

Cambridge University's Under the Microscope is a collection of videos that show glimpses of the natural and man-made world in stunning close-up. They are released every Monday and Thursday for the next few weeks and you can see them here: http://bit.ly/A6bwCE

Professor Gillian Griffiths:
"Cells of the immune system protect the body against pathogens. If cells in our bodies are infected by viruses, or become cancerous, then killer cells of the immune system identify and destroy the affected cells. Cytotoxic T cells are very precise and efficient killers. They are able to destroy infected or cancerous cells, without destroying healthy cells surrounding them. The Wellcome Trust funded laboratory of Professor Gillian Griffiths, at the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research, investigates just how this is accomplished. By understanding how this works, we can develop ways to control killer cells. This will allow us to find ways to improve cancer therapies, and ameliorate autoimmune diseases caused when killer cells run amok and attack healthy cells in our bodies."

Cytotoxic T cells are just 10 microns in length: approximately one-tenth the width of a human hair. These movies are 92 times real time.

The original footage shown was made by Alex Ritter, a PhD student on the NIH-OxCam programme, in the laboratory of Professor Gillian Griffiths at the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research and the Department of Medicine of the Clinical School of the University of Cambridge. The images were acquired using an Andor Revolution spinning disk system with an Olympus microscope. Professor Griffiths is a Wellcome Trust Principal Research Fellow.

Crohn’s disease (regional ileitis, regional enteritis), ulcerative colitis, leaky gut syndrome, false appendicitis pain, diverticulosis, diverticulitis, dysbiosis, esophageal reflux, spastic colon, constipation, malabsorption syndrome (coeliac disease), etc.

Picture
Profile

More and more people over the past fifty years have been suffering from a number of complaints affecting the entire length of the digestive system, from mouth and throat ailments, down to the stomach, and all the way through that serpentine piping to haemorrhoids around their afterburner. Some of these disorders are mild, others are extremely serious and will need addressing without delay.

The main cause of these problems, it goes without saying IS WHAT WE EATAND DRINK!! In the documentary FoodMatters , the chief causes of metabolic disease are covered, and the conditions listed above all fall squarely into that category. I am lumping this group together as Digestive Disorders since the remedies for them are essentially the same. Once one appreciates why these conditions occur, the answers become straightforward enough to implement.

CROHN’S DISEASE (REGIONAL ENTERITIS)

Pain in the lower right abdomen, malabsorption of nutrients, low-grade fever, weight-loss, flatulence. Crohn’s is a condition where segments of the colon (large intestine) become inflamed, thickened and ulcerated. Traditional treatments will include corticosteroids, antibiotics, immunosuppressive drugs and dietary changes. Crohn’s can cause partial blockage of the large intestine, causing pain and bouts of diarrhoea. The same condition occurring in the small intestine is known as regional enteritis, the chronic form of which may also create fistulae(unnatural joinings) between adjacent loops of the intestines or between bowel tissue and the bladder, vagina or skin.

ULCERATIVE COLITIS

Inflammation of the colon lining. Symptoms are pain, with blood and/or mucus in the faeces.

LEAKY GUT SYNDROME

Where damage to the small intestine wall can increase gut permeability to undigested food particles which enter the bloodstream and begin causing ‘allergic’ reactions. Dr Leo Galland, Director of Medicine at the Foundation for Integrated Medicine, states:

“Leaky gut syndrome is a group of clinical disorders associated with increased intestinal permeability. They include inflammatory and infectious bowel diseases, chronic inflammatory arthritides, cryptogenic skin conditions like acne, psoriasis and dermatitis herpetiformis, many diseases triggered by food allergy or specific food intolerance, including eczema, urticaria, and irritable bowel syndrome, AIDS, chronic fatigue syndromes, chronic hepatitis, chronic pancreatitis, cystic fibrosis and pancreatic carcinoma. Hyper-permeability may play a primary, etiologic role in the evolution of each disease, or may be a secondary consequence of it which causes immune activation, hepatic dysfunction, and pancreatic insufficiency, creating a vicious cycle. Unless specifically investigated, the role of altered intestinal permeability in patients with leaky gut syndrome often goes unrecognised.” 1

DIVERTICULOSIS, DIVERTICULITIS

Sacs may appear in weak sections of the intestinal tract, caused by pressure from the inner lining (pulsion diverticula) or from pressure exerted without (traction diverticula). Diverticulosis describes the passive existence of diverticula. Diverticulitis describes the condition when these sacs become perforated, inflamed or impacted.

DYSBIOSIS

The human digestive system contains over four hundred species of microflora (bacteria, yeast, fungi, protozoa, etc.) weighing over three pounds. Usually, in a properly pH-adjusted, harmonious alimentary tract, they live together in peace and balance (homeostasis). When, through our choices of food and lifestyle, we upset this balance, dysbiosis occurs, a term coined by Russian scientist Elie Metchnikoff, who maintained that toxic compounds produced by the aberrant breakdown of food by these bacteria caused many of the degenerative conditions, especially since this toxicity was carried to other parts of the body via the bloodstream and lymph.

IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME (IBS)

A general condition, thought to affect over 15% of the western populations, describing generalised abdominal pain, usually accompanied by diarrhoea and constipation, which leads to dysfunctional contractions in the intestine. Officially (according to orthodox medicine, unwilling to accept its existence as a separate disorder) the cause of IBS is unknown. In reality, IBS is yet another manifestation of what happens when 21st century processed food is put through the human digestive system.

COELIAC DISEASE

(MALABSORPTION SYNDROME)

A condition in which the small intestine fails to digest and absorb food. Usually due to gluten/gliaden damage, which atrophies the nutrient-absorptive villi lining of the intestine. Symptoms include stunted growth, distended abdomen and pale, frothy, foul-smelling stools.

STOMACH ULCERS, REFLUX AND HP

Pain in the stomach after eating and reflux (‘heartburn’), where hydrochloric acid is driven up the oesophagus, is often caused by excess abdominal fat distorting the ring of muscle at the base of the oesophagus – the oesophageal sphincter — a one-way valve designed to prevent this from happening. Other causes include too much acid, not enough acid, a hiatal hernia, gluten/gliaden aversion, and helicobacter pylori (HP)infection, a troublesome bacterium that can inhabit the mucus of the stomach causing ulcers in the stomach lining and, eventually, stomach cancer.

HIATAL HERNIA

The top section of the stomach displaces itself by pushing through the gap in the diaphragm. This common complaint is often symptom-free but in other cases, acid reflux is experienced, which can proceed in time to ‘Barrett’s esophagus’, a pre-cancerous condition, and thereafter to esophageal or stomach cancer.

CHRONIC CONSTIPATION AND ITT

Many have up to eight full meals in them at any one time. The proper Intestinal Transit Time (ITT) is ideally around 24 hours. This is the length of time it takes a meal to go from mouth to anus. In many, this period is extended dramatically up to 48–72 hours because of over-consumption of low-fibre meats and grains (breads, pasta, etc.). As you know from your childhood, flour and water make great glue. Dr Dennis Vander Kraats from Australia advises:

“Generally, most of the digestive processes and absorption of beneficial nutrients occur within 12 hours after consuming the food. Therefore, the slower the ITT, the longer the spent toxic waste matter sits in the bowel, putrefying and fermenting. The bowel is a semi-permeable membrane, which means toxins that have built up in the waste matter can filter through the bowel wall and be absorbed into other tissue and the bloodstream.”

In other words, toxins are taken all over the body where the immune system will have to detoxify and eliminate the trouble. The act of the immune system clearing this mess is sometimes mistakenly remarked upon as a ‘disease process’.

Constant straining of a constipated bowel has been linked to colorectal cancer. Certainly, putrefying matter caught in the colon is subjected to bile acids over an extended time, and bile acids in human colons are carcinogenic.

CHIEF CAUSES OF DIGESTIVE DISEASES
  • Overweight
  • Overeating
  • Gluten/gliaden damage from wheat, barley, rye and oat products
  • Bacterial and/or mycoplasmic (fungal) infections
  • Small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), brought on by low digestive enzyme output
  • Processed diets
  • Lack of proper exercise
  • Terror, stress and emotional upsets
  • Too much refined sugar and grains (a high percentage of western grains, stored in silos, are contaminated with aspergillus moulds)
  • Too little fibre
  • Clogged or damaged villi receptors in the intestine preventing inadequate nutrient absorption
  • Vitamin D deficiency
  • A generally acidic, anaerobic internal environment, resulting in an inadequate immune system response
  • Antibiotic abuse
  • General drug abuse
  • Coffee, carbonated beverages and alcohol
  • Poor water intake
In her best-selling book, Internal Cleansing, Dr Linda Berry, a chiropractor and clinical nutritionist, summarises the symptoms of self-poisoning.

“If you experience any of the following symptoms, you may be experiencing autointoxication (a process whereby you are poisoned by substances produced by your own body as a result of inadequate digestion and elimination), and therefore you might want to consider some type of internal cleansing program:

Allergy or intolerance to certain foods

Bad breath and foul-smelling gas and stools

Constipation, diarrhoea, sluggish elimination, irregular bowel movements

Frequent congestion, colds, viruses

Flatulence or gas and frequent intestinal disorders

Frequent headaches for no apparent reason

General aches and pains that migrate from one place to another

Intolerance to fatty foods

Low energy; loss of vitality for no apparent reason

Lower back pain

Lowered resistance to infections

Needing to sleep a long time

Pain in your liver or gall bladder

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS), breast soreness, vaginal infections

Skin problems, rashes, boils, pimples, acne”

Commentary

Bacteria, yeasts and fungi are generally quite sparse in the upper intestinal tract, but when overgrowths allow them to proliferate in the duodenum and jejunum (the majority portion of the small intestine), they can compete for nutrition with the host. This is where the problems begin. Symptoms describing overgrowths of these critters are well known: abdominal pain and cramps, constipation, diarrhoea, fatigue, fever, flatulence, foul-smelling faeces, skin rashes and hives, leaky gut, indigestion, reflux, low back pain, malabsorption and weight loss. They can cause a corruption and putrefaction of the food chyme (food leaving the stomach for the intestine).

Enzymes ejected from these organisms (known as decarboxylases) work on the chyme, converting the amino acids histadine to histamine (hence ‘allergic’ reactions sometimes treated with ‘anti-histamines’), ornithine to putrescine and lysine to cadaverine. Actions of these products, known as vasoactive amines, will stir up a host of the problems we are examining These fungi and yeasts are responsible for many apparent food allergies. Proteins, such gluten from wheat and barley and casein from cow’s milk, may also damage intestinal structure, bringing on some conditions.

Take action?

This regime should be followed strictly and consistently. Ensure regular meals are taken in small amounts but often.

Depending on the nature of the digestive disorder, commence changing your food intake to include a progressively larger proportion of organic, whole, high fibre, high water content plant dietary, the vast majority eaten raw. Reduce animal-based foods to a minimum or ideally eliminate them altogether. Proper food combining is essential. Do not combine proteins with carbohydrates. In the event of a sore digestive tract, lightly steam vegetables to soften fibre. If suffering cancer in this area or yeast overgrowths, commence THE ANTI–CANDIDA DIETARY REGIMEN. Follow also the Foods to avoid section of THE FOOD FOR THOUGHT LIFESTYLEREGIMEN
  • DIET: AVOID ALL SUGAR AND YEAST
  • DIET: Avoid all products that readily break down into glucose or have a yeast component: e.g. bread, pasta, pastries, sweets, pies, alcoholic beverages (esp. beers!) and some fruits and vegetables (see diet sections above)
  • HYDRATION: Commence drinking half your own bodyweight in ounces of water per day (i.e. a 160 lb male can drink 80 oz of water a day, which is approximately 10 glasses). A good guide for adults is 2 – 2.5 litres a day. Do NOT drink distilled or fluoridated/chlorinated water. Do not drink water out of warm plastic bottles due to the leaching of estrogenic chemicals
  • Baking soda: ½ teaspoon of sodium bicarbonate mixed into a glass of water to relieve acid reflux
  • REAL SALT: Half a teaspoon (tsp) of Himalayan salt is recommended per 10 glasses of water. Maintain over the long term
  • PREVENTION: Don’t smoke and avoid second-hand smoke
  • PREVENTION: Avoid behavioural and dietary problems that cause the condition (coffee, carbonated drinks, chocolate, etc)
  • DETOXIFICATION: Conduct a two-week bowel cleanse with magnesium oxide
  • DETOXIFICATION: Cancer patients should also consider colon hydrotherapy for extra internal cleanliness
  • RESTORING NUTRIENT BALANCE: COMMENCE THE BASICSUPPLEMENT PROGRAM, including THE ANTI–CANDIDA/FUNGALSUPPLEMENTATION, ensuring:
  • A probiotic supplement such as acidophilus to install beneficial flora
  • Optimise vitamin D serum levels (see a Guide to Nutritional Supplementsbefore taking)
  • Vitamin C complex, 25–30 g per day (see a Guide to Nutritional Supplements before taking)
  • Take 1 tablespoon of ground flaxseed (linseed) meal or oil daily
  • Pancreatic (digestive) enzyme capsules, two, three times daily away from food
  • BOOSTING IMMUNITY: Astragalus and echinacea, (herbs), two capsules each, three times a day
  • BOOSTING IMMUNITY: Indulge in regular and vigorous exercise (unless health problems prevent this) to exercise and pump the lymphatic system, rid the body of waste products and draw in oxygen
  • BOOSTING IMMUNITY: Get plenty of rest
  • TIP: Be consistent!
  • TIP: Do not fall prey to sugar cravings. Who really wants to splurge and feed inside you?
Herxheimer’s reaction

During the critter-killing process, the body may become clogged with catabolic debris, dead beasties and their resultant toxaemia, including ammonia. You may feel ill as your symptoms apparently worsen. This is known as Herxheimer’s reaction, after the venerable German dermatologist of the same name. It is temporary and will be experienced in proportion to the vehemence with which you apply your attack strategies. Symptoms may be alleviated by commencing theANTI-CANDIDA DIETARY REGIMEN a full two weeks prior to starting on the anti-fungal/yeast supplements.

(NaturalNews) It is very encouraging to see a mainstream medicine insider with impressive credentials come out and confirm what some of us outsiders have known for a while.

Dr. Dwight Lundell has been a heart specialist MD and surgeon for 25 years, having performed 5,000 open heart surgeries. He was Chief Surgeon at the Banner Heart Hospital in Mesa, AZ, and he ran a successful private practice.

This is how he begins his personal testimony: "We physicians with all our training, knowledge and authority often acquire a rather large ego that tends to make it difficult to admit we are wrong. So, here it is. I freely admit to being wrong." Read the full story here and hear Dr Lundell in his own words here on the cholesterol scam.

  • Many varieties of wild plants offer great nutritional benefits.
  • Purslane might be the richest source of plant-based omega-3 fats, as well as being loaded with vitamins A, C, and E.
  • Even a high-quality, nutritious wild plant or herb can cause an unexpected reaction in some people. Try them one at a time and in SMALL amounts to see how your body is going to react.
  • It's a good idea to compile a library of books and field guides about wild edibles, as well as familiarizing yourself with toxic look-alikes to avoid. There is even a wild edible iPhone application to help you on your quest.
The Hidden Food in Your Yard - You May Walk by It Every Day...

By Dr. Mercola

A major part of achieving optimal health is living in partnership with nature.

Growing your own food is a great way to rekindle this connection with nature.

But have you thought about eating plants that grow wild--perhaps in your own backyard?

Some "weeds" can be delicious if prepared properly, and they are absolutely free.

In an article published earlier this summer, Live Science collected some easy-to-identify healthful weeds, including:
  • Dandelion: The entire plant is edible, and the leaves contain vitamins A, C and K, along with calcium, iron, manganese, and potassium.
  • Purslane: Purslane tops the list of plants with omega-3 fats.
  • Lamb's-quarters: Lamb's-quarters are like spinach, except healthier, tastier and easier to grow.
  • Plantain: Not the better-known banana-like plant with the same name.  It has a nutritional profile similar to dandelion.
  • Stinging Nettles: If you handle them so that you don't get a painful rash from the tiny, acid-filled needles, these are delicious and nutritious cooked or prepared as a tea.
This is of course how our ancestors ate. They hunted and gathered, and ALL of it was wild. And by all accounts, they were far healthier than we are.

Of course, like anything else, identification and use of wild plants requires spending some time educating yourself, lest you eat something inedible or even poisonous. But with some attention to learning what to look for, you can avail yourself of some of the most highly nutritious, health-promoting plants for FREE—and have a lot of fun doing it. With the availability of the Internet, in addition to a number of excellent printed books and even wild-food foraging classes, this information is now easy to access.

So, grab your favorite weeding tool and a basket, and step outside to see what little gems you can find in your own backyard!

There are many reasons why people become violent or do bad things: lack of money, social factors such as unemployment, drug abuse, alcoholism, idealism, etc. However, a growing number of studies are showing that the predisposition to crime and violence is often fuelled by glucose intolerance, heavy metal poisoning and junk diets. As a result of refined diets and an excess of sugar and other high glycaemic foods, the offender experiences chaotic blood sugar levels, glucose intolerance and ‘reactive’ hypoglycaemia — the rebound low experienced after sugar levels have plunged following the resultant over-production of insulin.

Bernard Gesch of Natural Justice, a UK-based charity, is championing the move towards improving nutrition in prisons as well as society. A former probation officer, Gesch is adamant that the central strategy towards discontinuing our culture’s flirtation with social violence must be to feed its people properly:

“What we’re trying to do is introduce something new into the criminal justice system, that is, the existence of the human brain.”

Gesch believes that exposure to neurotoxins such as lead, cadmium, beryllium, mercury, arsenic, aspartame and food additives, together with nutritional deficiencies and a constant intake of low-nutrient-density, sugary junk foods is all it takes to get the riot police out:

“There are many chemicals around us that are known to affect behaviour. Our environment is increasingly polluted. Our food supply has fundamentally changed. In the same way that we don’t notice ageing, how would we notice the effects of gradual changes in our diet and environment?”

THE CYCLE OF VIOLENCE

Consider that all behaviour is controlled by the brain which is completely dependent on nutrition. Consider that a disrupted or chaotic supply of glucose, the only fuel the brain accepts, has a marked effect on behaviour, and that junk food is directly responsible. Consider also that anti-nutrients, such as lead, aspartame and cadmium, directly affect brain function. And then recognise that when the criminal is ‘brought to justice’ and imprisoned, the same low nutrient-density food, drugs, cigarettes, lack of sunlight and pollution accompany the inmate and continue the deleterious effects. Then he is released into the same society and social circumstances, to ingest the same junk food, take the same drugs and stimulants and experience the same hopeless behaviour patterns.

In the UK, Gesch’s South Cumbria Alternative Sentencing Options Scheme (SCASO) required young offenders to undergo ‘nutritional rehabilitation’ as part of their processing. Tests recorded the levels of vitamins and minerals as well as toxins, blood sugar and an overall assessment of the inmate’s dietary habits.Every subject tested had abnormal glucose intolerance on a five-hour glucose tolerance test. Zinc deficiency was also extremely prevalent.1

Finnish researcher Virkkunen studied 69 repeat offenders for reactive hypoglycaemia. With no exceptions, all had glucose intolerance. A later study showed abnormal insulin activity among all violent re-offenders who participated.2

In the US, behavioural expert Professor Stephen Schoenthaler placed 3,000 inmates on a low saturated fat, high-fibre diet which restricted sugary, refined foods. The results were extraordinary. Schoenthaler reported a
  • 21% reduction in anti-social behaviour
  • 25% reduction in assaults
  • 75% reduction in the use of restraints
  • 100% reduction in suicides3
Another study confirmed that amending the diet indeed has startling consequences in behaviour modification. The project reported a 44% reduction in anti-social behaviour with the most significant reductions occurring with repeat, serious offenders.4

TOXIC METALS

A combination of the previously noted dietary problems, coupled with measurable increases in lead and cadmium in the subjects tested, demonstrated pronounced delinquency, impaired intellectual performance and a predisposition to commit violence. These pollution problems have been measured in studies around the world.5 Perhaps more startling is the amount of lead and cadmium required to affect behaviour: around 1% of that needed to produce physical symptoms of poisoning, so the link between the two effects has been more difficult to pinpoint.

Perhaps the most damning aspect of social violence comes from the fact that, in spite of the heap of science demonstrating quite unequivocally that good nutrition has this quieting effect, and that even adding orange juice to the diets of inmates has been known to produce a staggering 47% reduction in anti-social behaviour among juvenile offenders,6 nothing is done by government, the prison services, the food industry or medical establishment centrally to correct the problem. Violence appears to be an economic and social necessity. When social order breaks down, governments can react to the emergency by taking on more powers and raising taxes. Prisons are quite the boom industry in America, while newspapers and the entertainment industry rely on a steady diet of violence, rape and anti-social behaviour to fill their columns and screens for the gossip-hungry and violence-titillated public. To all ‘public servants’ and politicians out there, desiring to make their mark and do something to leave society in a better state than that in which they found it, the jury is in. What will you do?

FOOD ALLERGIES AND VIOLENCE

Is the reader any longer surprised that the very problems stirring up hyperactivity and a dive in intellectual performance among our youth are precisely those which blight our streets and nations today? Junk diets, food allergies, such as milk and gluten intolerance, digestive problems, disturbed sleep, and reactions to food additives are ever part of the root cause. Menzies discovered that of 25 children with tension fatigue complications, 84% had abnormal EEG and 72% had digestive problems specific to the diets they were consuming.7 Gesch summarises:

“75% of our referrals were for violent offences, many of whom were multiple offenders…. Of those kept on the combined social and nutritional regime, none re-offended with [violence] by the end of the 18-month pilot study.” 8

The cost of this amazing supplement ‘treatment’? Between £4-£10 a month. The cost of keeping a juvenile in detention? Over £2,000 a month.

Once again, a fundamental reappraisal of society’s basic relationship with its food and environment is the key to overcoming the social mayhem experienced in so many parts of the world today. The majority of the conditions which give rise to violent behaviour can be treated simply and effectively with nutritional and lifestyle changes. This will of course adequately explain why the Hunzas and certain other ‘isolated’ groups around the world have no track record of violence or anti-social behaviour in their cultures due to nutrient-dense diets, clean environment and socially responsible attitudes. As Harvard professor Ernest Hooten once remarked:

“Let us go to the ‘ignorant savage’, consider his way of eating, and be wise.” 9

Women diagnosed with breast cancer are more likely to survive if they eat up their greens, research suggests.

A large Chinese study found a link between higher consumption of cruciferous vegetables such as greens, cabbage and broccoli, and reduced breast cancer death rates.

Researchers followed the progress of almost 5,000 women for around five years after they were diagnosed with breast cancer.
